The interaction between feedback from active galactic nuclei and supernovae

چکیده
Energetic feedback from supernovae (SNe) and from active galactic nuclei (AGN) are both important processes that are thought to control howmuch gas is able to condense into galaxies and form stars. We show that although both AGN and SNe suppress star formation, they mutually weaken one another’s effect by up to an order of magnitude in haloes in the mass range for which both feedback processes are efficient (10M8vm200v10M8). These results demonstrate the importance of the simultaneous, non-independent inclusion of these two processes in models of galaxy formation to estimate the total feedback strength. These results are of particular relevance to the interpretation of results from hydrodynamical simulations that model only one of the feedback processes, and also to those semi-analytic models that implicitly assume the effects of the two feedback processes to be independent.

Consequences of dark matter self-annihilation for galaxy formation
Galaxy formation requires a process that continually heats gas and quenches star formation in order to reproduce the observed shape of the luminosity function of bright galaxies. To accomplish this, current models invoke heating from supernovae, and energy injection from active galactic nuclei. However, observations of radio-loud active galactic nuclei suggest that their feedback is likely to n...
متن کاملObscuring Material around Seyfert Nuclei with Starbursts
The structure of obscuring matter in the environment of active galactic nuclei with associated nuclear starbursts is investigated using 3-D hydrodynamical simulations. Simple analytical estimates suggest that the obscuring matter with energy feedback from supernovae has a torus-like structure with a radius of several tens of parsecs and a scale height of ∼ 10 pc. These estimates are confirmed b...
متن کاملIntracluster and Intragroup Entropy from Quasar Activity
We investigate how the hierarchical merging of dark matter halos, the radiative cooling of baryons, and the energy feedback from supernovae and active galactic nuclei or quasars combine to govern the amount and the thermal state of the hot plasma pervading groups and clusters of galaxies. We show that, by itself, supernova preheating of the external gas flowing into clusters falls short of expl...
متن کاملAGN variability: from Seyfert nuclei to QSOs
The continuum variability of optically selected Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is found to be consistent with that expected from a simple Poissonian process, in which the total luminosity of an object is produced by the multiple superposition of identical pulses. The energies, time-scales and rates of the pulses are found to be in the range of those expected from supernovae which generate fast ev...
متن کاملA Maximum Stellar Surface Density in Dense Stellar Systems
We compile observations of the surface mass density profiles of dense stellar systems, including globular clusters in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, massive star clusters in nearby starbursts, nuclear star clusters in dwarf spheroidals and late-type disks, ultra-compact dwarfs, and galaxy spheroids spanning the range from low-mass, “cusp” bulges and ellipticals to massive “core” ellipticals...
